Calculate the gap

Request the current payoff amount from the lender and compare it with realistic written trade-in offers. If the payoff is higher, the difference is negative equity.

A dealer saying it will “pay off” the old loan does not necessarily mean the gap disappears.

Trace the gap in the contract

Negative equity may be added to the amount financed, offset by cash, or reflected elsewhere in the deal. Review the itemization and confirm how the prior loan will be satisfied.

Do not evaluate the transaction by monthly payment alone.

Compare alternatives

Consider postponing the trade, paying down the balance, selling through another channel, choosing a less expensive replacement, or keeping the current vehicle if it is reliable. Each option has costs and risks.

Avoid draining the entire emergency reserve to erase the gap.

Confirm the old account closes

After the transaction, verify that the prior lender received the payoff and that no balance remains. Keep the payoff quote, contract, and closure confirmation.

Your action checklist

  1. Request a dated payoff quote
  2. Collect realistic vehicle offers
  3. Calculate the equity position
  4. Locate the gap in the new contract
  5. Compare alternatives
  6. Verify the old loan closes
