Normalize the offers
Compare the same amount, purpose, term, collateral, and timing. A lower rate on a shorter term or larger down payment is not the same offer as a higher rate with less cash due.
Write every assumption at the top of the comparison.
Separate rate, APR, and total cost
Interest rate describes the cost of interest, while APR is designed to reflect certain broader credit costs. The contract and product disclosures show the details. For auto loans, compare amount financed, finance charge, total of payments, and add-ons.
For mortgages, compare official Loan Estimates using consistent loan scenarios.
Read conditions and flexibility
Check prepayment rules, variable-rate terms, balloon payments, collateral, personal guarantees, late fees, optional products, and conditions that must be satisfied before closing or funding.
Ask for unclear promises in writing.
Choose the affordable total package
The lowest payment may rely on the longest term; the lowest cash due may finance more cost. Choose the offer that fits the full budget and risk tolerance—not the fastest sales pitch.
